Right To Education
The Mohan Scholars (TMS) is a project initiated by TGES to extend education to children from lesser privileged families of the society.
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act or the RTE Act 2009 is an opportunity for educational institutes to contribute significantly to the development of our nation. TGES embraced this opportunity and TMS was born.
The Mohan Scholars - the name is a tribute to Bapuji's younger brother Mohanbhai, social visionary who worked dedicatedly to uplift people from the under-privileged society. The RTE Act requires private schools to admit children between the age of 6-14. TGES decided to admit students at the age of 3 into kindergarten believing that an early start would be more beneficial. The hope is to groom them well enough to enable a smooth transition into regular Grade1 at the age of 6.
All 64 Mohan Scholars in 2010 were girls. They were chosen after careful scrutiny to ensure that truly needy children benefitted. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation helped the organization to shortlist these children from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families. Medical check-ups were also conducted and free medication and a health plan has been extended to all of them.
The Mohan Scholars were initiated into the TGES family on Teachers' Day. They were 64 on the day the journey began. Today they number 167. And growing!
TheTMS Project is a defining moment in TGES history. A proud and humbling experience.
